UK’s ugliest website gets Easyspace makeover

Posted in Web Hosting on Tuesday, January 24, 2012, 06:34

Web hosting and design company Easyspace has given the UK’s ugliest website a makeover.

The website, http://www.jamborette.org.uk/, which promotes a popular international Scout camp  - the Blair Atholl International Jamborette - was judged to be ‘dull and old fashioned’ in a competition run by Easyspace to find the worst looking website in Britain.

The Jamborette is a global biennial event that draws together 1000 young Scouts from 20 countries to an international camp at Blair Atholl in the Scottish Highlands. The website for the event is run by Scouting volunteers and beat off competition from more than 500 other ‘ugly’ websites to win a £3,500 makeover by the Easyspace web design team. Easyspace’s web design team creates new websites for hundreds of customers every year, from start-ups to established businesses whose online presence needs a facelift.

Sarah Haran, managing director of Easyspace, said: “We were inundated with entries from some really out-dated websites but the Jamborette’s was by far the worst. It looked really old fashioned and was difficult to navigate. The volunteers who created it ten years ago did a great job at the time but Easyspace was able to bring it right up to date and build a much more attractive and engaging website. Thanks to some Easyspace TLC, the Blair Atholl Jamborette website now looks great.”

A spokesperson for Scouts Scotland said: “Blair Atholl International Jamborette is the most exciting event on the Scottish Scout calendar where we host Scouts from all over the world. The website is staffed by volunteers who knew how dated it looked and decided to enter the competition. We are very happy with the result from Easyspace. The Blair Atholl website is now as fresh and fun as the Jamborette itself.”

Andrew Sharkey, who leads the Blair Atholl Jamborette, added: “The new website works really smoothly and is just what we need to help publicise our event around the world and grab the attention of young people hoping to take part.  With the Duchess of Cambridge recently joining The Scout Association as a volunteer, we are expecting even more web traffic and interest in Scouting events such as this.”

The Blair Atholl International Jamborette is an opportunity for international Scouts to meet their Scottish counterparts as they take partin adventure and outdoor activities as well as living and cooking together on site.

Andrew Sharkey added: “Even though we were judged the ugliest website in the UK, we were very excited to have won the opportunity of a makeover. We’ve been really impressed by Easyspace’s input during the design process and are thrilled with the finished product. We hope that our participants and other stakeholders will enjoy using it.”

Sarah Haran of Easyspace concluded: “The old Jamborette website just didn’t do the event justice. With the next camp taking place this July, the brand new design not only brings it into the twenty first century but will also help to attract more Scouts from other countries around the world in the future.”

Easyspace is a subsidiary of AIM listed iomart Group plc which was named Scottish Digital IT Company of the Year 2011 and has just been voted one of the best web hosting companies in the world by HostReview.

Netflix Launches in the UK & Ireland

Posted in Facebook on Monday, January 09, 2012, 05:18

Back in October Netflix revealed that it would be bringing its TV and film streaming service to the UK and Ireland in early 2012.

Today, Neil Hunt, Chief Product Officer at Netflix took to the company blog to announce that, just 9 days into the New Year, Netflix has upheld its promise and released the service for just £5.99 per month (€6.99).

All users can sign up for a free one month trial where they’ll be able to access popular TV shows and films such as The Only Way is Essex, Prison Break, The English Patient, and Blitz.

Netflix UK & Ireland will be available on nearly all TV’s, smartphones, and mobile computing devices. Hunt says “We have spent the last four years building and refining streaming players for the major game consoles, smart TVs, Blu-ray players, tablets, and mobile phones, as well as Mac and PC-based computers […] The current versions have some cool streaming technology that starts streaming the video instantly and quickly scales up to high definition with surround sound when your broadband connection supports it. If you don’t have a game console or smart TV, there are nifty smart TV adaptor products on the market that convert a regular television to an Internet-connected television starting at around £50.”

For younger children, kids TV shows and films will be also available on the Nintendo Wii, soon to be on many other devices. Kids shows include SpongeBob SquarePants and Dora the Explorer to Power Rangers, iCarly and Thomas the Tank Engine.

Unfortunately for the anti-social networkers among you, the UK and Ireland service will be yet another platform that requires a Facebook.com profile to connect.

Bug Steals 45,000 Facebook Passwords from UK & French Users

Posted in Facebook on Friday, January 06, 2012, 05:16

According to security firm Seculert, over 45,000 sets of login details have been stolen from UK and France based Facebook.com users.

The Ramnit malware behind the theft, which was first discovered in 2010, was found by the security firm yesterday and is believed to be logging in to Facebook accounts and transmitting malicious links via users Facebook walls and by status updates.

Seculert has provided Facebook with all 45,000 accounts that are believed to have been compromised although Facebook has so far denied a comment on the situation.

Facebook users are being adviced to run anti-virus software if they’re concerned they have the malware on their computer and are also being advised to change their passwords on all of their online accounts (should they be the same), as there is a possibility the malware could access other accounts using the same login details.

The Seculert blog details the malware’s history, saying “Discovered in April 2010, the Microsoft Malware Protection Center (MMPC) described Ramnit as “a multi-component malware family which infects Windows executable as well as HTML files”, “stealing sensitive information such as stored FTP credentials and browser cookies”. In July 2011 a Symantec report [PDF] estimated that Ramnit worm variants accounted for 17.3 percent of all new malicious software infections.”

Since then, Ramnit has been known to have stolen bank details by compromising online banking sessions and bypassing authentication and transaction signing systems. From September 2011 to the end of December 2011, over 800,000 computers were been found to be infected with the malware.

Apple & Google shoot for English Football Premier League Rights

Posted in Apple on Wednesday, January 04, 2012, 05:16

According to the Daily Mail, Apple is showing serious interest in placing a bid for the rights to the English Premier League (EPL), presumably to show on its Apple TV platform.

The EPL seems like a logical addition to Apple’s $99 TV package, which already includes access to Major League Baseball (MLB), National Basketball Association (NBA) and National Hockey League (NHL) content.

It’s thought that Premier League rights could also boost the sales of Apple’s portable devices, the iPad in particular, although Macbook and iPhone sales could also see an increase.

According to the article, Google are also “expected to make similar soundings” that could significantly boost the standing of its Google TV platform.

Sky, who paid £1.6 billion for its current packages, are expected to make another bid for the rights, as are ESPN who have expressed an interest in acquiring more packages, and Middle East network Al Jezeera who are also likely to offer a substantial bid.

Terrestrial channel ITV is in the process of renewing its 2 year contract with the Football Association to display some of the matches for £42 million a year.

Facebook Ticker Gets Sponsored Stories (Ads)

Posted in Facebook on Tuesday, November 22, 2011, 06:53

Facebook has told Mashable that it will soon be introducing annoying ads to the Ticker, otherwise known as Sponsored Stories.

According to Mashable, a Facebook spokesman has said “Sponsored Stories now appear in Ticker on the home page [...] Sponsored Stories are an extension of News Feed, so we think it’s natural that they appear in Ticker.”

Although the Ticker was released to generally negative reception, it’s safe to say that users have now become accustomed to its story snippets. The addition of sponsored stories, however, may stir up old feelings of irritation towards the Ticker as, what is effectively advertising, will be placed in the middle of users’ news.

It’s like Google putting serving AdWords bang in the middle of the SERPs (although at the rate its going this wouldn’t be too much of a surprise).

The only saving grace is that users can cross off the sponsored storied, though they can’t prevent them from appearing in the first place. As Mashable points out, this is becoming the norm for social networking sites, however, have Facebook gone a bit too far by trying to integrate the stories using the same design as regular updates? Seems a bit cheeky to us.

Popular Facebook Game, FarmVille, Gets Real Toys

Posted in Facebook on Monday, November 14, 2011, 10:28

Although it was only a matter of time, we didn’t think it would have taken this long – Facebook’s most popular game, FarmVille has finally released a series of plush toys styled as animals from the game.

Best Buy have exclusive rights to sell the $9.99 Christmas themed toys which come in the form of a pig, goat, cow, sheep, chicken, duck, horse or rabbit.

Each toy will come with 10 free Farm Cash token as well as a digital code which offers a limited edition virtual version of the animal for your farm. If you splash out the $80 to get the whole set you’ll get a free Super Orchard once all of your digital codes have been registered in the game.

You can get one of the toys for just $0.99 when you buy a $25 Zynga game card.

Pre-orders for the toys start will start on the Best Buy website at some point today, with the toys released on November 25th.

Google Ad +1 Button to Images

Posted in Google on Monday, November 14, 2011, 09:55

Google has announced this week that it has rolled out the +1 feature to Google Images.

In a blog post, Google software engineer, Xiaorui Gan, explains “You search for [Mount Kilimanjaro summit] and switch to Images mode to find rows and rows of photos testifying that this peak can indeed be conquered. By hovering over one of the images, you can quickly recommend this photo to your friends by clicking the +1 button.”

Displaying +1’s will work in a similar fashion to the normal SERPs in that you’ll be able to see which images your friends have +1’d straight from the results page. Images will display a grey bar along the bottom with your friends names in them so you can see which images have been +1’d.

The images will also appear in the +1 tab of your Google+ profile so, of course, make sure you’re signed in if you want to save your +1’s. The actual display of the image sin you +1’s is a little disappointing as they appear as a regular URL which doesn’t differentiate them from any other +1’s. Once Google play around with the presentation of +1’d images (which you can bet they will) it’ll be another small step to improving the Google+ platform.
